The United Nations system operates in a world of increasing demand for information in most of its sectors and areas of concern. Information is at the centre of most of the activities undertaken by the United Nations and the organizations of the common system, and it is vital for the successful implementation of programmatic activities, as well as for those of a normative nature. In this respect, the role of the United Nations system, as a source of structured information, or knowledge, is expected to reach unprecedented visibility in the global information society.
